About Bleeding Heart Tetra

The Bleeding Heart Tetra is named for the distinctive red spot on its side that resembles a bleeding heart. These elegant fish have a unique body shape with a deeper profile than most tetras and develop beautiful dorsal fins. They are peaceful but somewhat delicate fish that prefer soft water and excellent water quality. Best kept in schools of 6 or more in well-maintained planted tanks.

  • Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)
  • pH: 6.0-7.0
  • Water Hardness: Soft (2-8 dGH)
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <10 ppm

Water quality critical - sensitive to poor conditions.

Feeding

Omnivores requiring quality food:

  • High-quality flakes or pellets
  • Frozen foods: bloodworms, brine shrimp
  • Live foods for conditioning

Behavior & Compatibility

Peaceful but shy:

  • School size: 6+ minimum
  • Sensitive: To poor water and aggression
  • Best with: Peaceful, non-nippy fish

Special Note: The red heart spot becomes more pronounced in optimal conditions.

Breeding

Can be challenging:

  • Very soft, acidic water required
  • Fine-leaved plants or spawning mop
  • Condition with live foods
  • Remove adults immediately after spawning
