The pages that oversimplify otos usually leave out the part that matters most: mature tank, healthy purchase, and steady feeding. Get those three things right, and they stop feeling like a risky fish and start feeling like a very reasonable one.

The formula for Otocinclus success is straightforward but non-negotiable:

  1. Add only to established tanks (3+ months old)
  2. Quarantine every specimen for 3-4 weeks with parasite treatment
  3. Feed supplemental vegetables and algae wafers daily
  4. Keep a real group, but do not stock more otos than the tank can feed
  5. Keep stable, pristine water conditions
  6. Select healthy, active specimens with rounded bellies

Otocinclus are not impossible, but they are unforgiving of the wrong start. Buy settled fish, give them a seasoned tank, and keep food in front of them, and the odds improve dramatically.
